So ... who has been talking about me ?

I guess to be fair the professor would have to be much larger and wearing a sweater - vest but really people this stereotype of the Science professor is just a stereotype. Some of us don't have labs in the basement or assistants with humped backs (got too expensive and wouldn't drink the juglone solution).

Oh hi! Yeah, word has it that the fish used in the juglone experiment expired later in the day. In these days of heightened sensitivity to live animal testing I was somewhat surprised that a journal would publish an article that encouraged a testing procedure that was lethal in any significant way. The one caveat was that the article specified that the fish would revive if placed in fresh water and there was some discussion in the class about how sedated the fish was or how you would recognize a sedated fish. There were several points where I would say "OK it looks like he is sedated" when the fish would suddenly become active. I would argue that having done the experiment there is now no need to repeat it or that if the experiment is repeated in the future that we have learned how to avoid lethal exposure from this experiment. I did not and do not take the death of the subject as trivial. Your suggestion of using a beta for the experiment had a couple of problems a) the article indicated that the procedure works on goldfish and b) a beta is physically and dispositionally as different from a goldfish as you can get. My family has had alot of experience with beta fish and they are tough hombres in the fish world and I had my doubts that saturated juglone would get to a beta if it just sedated a goldfish. Oh well, ultimately it was my call to make and I did what I thought was a reasonable assessment of the risk for the fish and I was wrong. If this has disappointed or discouraged you ... I apologize. Take care.
