CHEM 1013 Lab 2 Penny Data

So we have been working in the penny library for a fortnight now and we have counted and measured pennies ....
And boiled pennies in acid ...

All in the name of science. So now it is time for us to collect our data as a class. Use the comments section of this post to give the densities that you measured. Give them as YEAR (Density gcm-3) [so you should report them as 1993 (7.8 gcm-3)]. This way you will be able to compare your data in your formal report with the data from the class.

Here are the Densities I got
1992- 1.2g/cm-3
1973- 0.81g/cm-3
1974- 0.93g/cm-3
1990- 0.83g/cm-3
1997- 0.81g/cm-3
2005- 0.64g/cm-3
2005P- 1.4g/cm-3

Andrew and Troy, your guys densities seem very large, are you sure you used the average mass of one penny and not the mass of the tem pennies? I have both masses in my table and I was confused at first too, maybe you guys made the same mistake I did at first of you guys had some intense pennies haha.

Not Sure Meghan, I'll check my calculations. It's very possible.
I'll post if I find the nature of my high numbers.

Thanks

Hi all,

I've double checked my figures and they seem to be reasonable. I also noticed that Dr. Mel shows a 1993 penny's density, for an example, and reports it as being 7.8 gcm-3. I'll ask about this tomorrow.

2008 [6.76 gcm-3]
1972 [7.88 gcm-3]
1966 [10.82 gcm-3]
1943 [8.27 gcm-3]

Those should be a little better...
