CH 1013 Class Assignment

So, who would like to know what was on the final exam?

This assignment has a number of parts. First you need to go over the end of chapter questions from the textbook (Chap. 2 - Chap. 8) and select one question from each chapter that you think is a good question. A good question would be one where the answer is not trivial, it requires thought to answer and covers at least one important principle taught in the chapter. The question may be from the syllabus set but may be any other end of chapter question.

Then log onto the comments section of this blog and state your selection. Your comment should include a statement of the chapter and question and a short reason why you think it would be a good exam question. Then read the other students comments as they come in and re-post if you change your mind.

Ultimately the class should agree on one question from each chapter that meets the criteria.

Your mark on the assignment will be out of 20 and 10/20 will be my assessment of how well the final set of questions meets the criteria (all students that participate will get the same mark). The remaining 10/20 will be a participation mark assessed by the nature and quality of your own contributions to the discussion.

The payoff? I will select one of the eight questions from your list for the first question on the final exam and it will have a value of 10%. I reserve the right to make minor changes to the question but you will be able to recognize it.

The deadline for the final class list of questions will be midnight, Sunday, December 3. All students must make a contribution to the discussion by Sunday, November 26.

So, for example:
I think we should choose the following questions:

Chap.1 quest. 10 (because it's dead easy)
Chap.2 quest. 10 (because it's dead easy)
Chap.3 quest. 10 (because it's dead easy)
Chap.4 quest. 10 (because it's dead easy)

And so on.

here are my suggestions for 7 questions:
chap 2 #48 (because it goes over all the rules of naming chemical formulas.)
Chap 3 #86 (its a good question; its get us to write a balance equation and find the limiting reagent.)
Chap 4 #40 (because it gets us to identify oxidation and reduction agents which makes us work with oxidation numbers and to break down the half reactions.)
Chap 5 #31(because it gets us to work with the ideal gas law)
Chap 6 #64 (because it gets us working with standard enthalpy changes.)
Chap 7 #80 (I agree with ms piggy, its a good question to understand electron configuration.)
Chap 8 #67 (It tests us to see what we know about the noble gases and their differences, why some form compounds and some don't.)

7 questions:
Chap. 2 #47 (quite a bit of time was spent on naming compounds and was used throughout the entire course)
Chap. 3 #43 (a good question for empirical and molecular formula, you have to understand a number of steps to answer)
Chap. 4 #39 (you have to understand half-reactions, and be able to identify oxidizing and reducing agents)
Chap. 5 #59 (need an understanding of partial pressure)
Chap. 6 #63 (need to be able to calculate enthalpy of formation)
Chap. 7 #31 (you need to be able to use more than one equation from the chapter, and an exo and endothermic part could be added to the question)
Chap. 8 #66 (I also agree with this question for chap 8)

7 Exam Questions:
Chap.2 #49(knowing how to write formulas is inportant for all chemistry)
Chap.3 #71(a number of steps are needed and a knowledge of excess and limiting reagents is required)
Chap.4 #39(you need to understand half-reactions, and identify oxidizing and reducing agents)
Chap.5 #49(there are a number of steps involoved and you need to know the molecular formula)
Chap.6 #57(Understanding of the Heat of Formation of Reaction equation which is used throughout the chapter)
Chap.7 #31(more than one equation from the chapter is needed)
Chap.8 #27&29(Electronic Configuration is important for understanding other parts of the chapter)

Here are some questions I thought were pretty sweet:

Ch 1.57 (this question is all most the same as a calculation we had to do in our first lab and its a good calculation for sigfigs)

Ch 2.47 (we did spend a lot of time nameing compounds in this chapter even though some of these are "dead easy" most of them are kinda hard so it could be a pretty good exam question.)

Ch 3.60 (as you've said this course is mostly about the BCE. I'm pretty sure this is not "hard enough" for an exam question just because there are so many other good questions on this chapter.)

Ch 4.44 (this question is pretty easy if you understand how the red-ox reaction works I would like to see this on the exam because there were no red-ox reaction questions on the test.)

Ch 5.38 (I think the ideal gas law is one of the most importent concepts in this chapeter)

Ch 6.35 (this is a good question and not only do you just need to know the formula you also need to know the specific heat as well.)

Ch 7.31 (it contains many of the concepts we covered in class)

Ch 8.34 (we havent really covered very much in this chapter and I havent read it yet so I dont really want to just throw some number out there untill I understand the question.)

We don't seem to have come to a conclusion, what I did is see which ones came up more often and it looks like this:
Ch. 2 - Question 49 (because you pretty much need to learn names to write therefore combines the two more popular 47 and 49)

Ch.3 - Q. 43 (it requires multiple steps therefore is challenging but still fair and it encompasses a lot of the concepts reviewed in the chapter)

Ch. 4 - Q 73 (we used moles in nearly every chapter after this therefore net ionic equations are important to know in order to get to these steps, it was also the only question that showed up twice)

Ch. 5 - Q. 49 (Requires knowledge of molecular formulas and also has calculations involved. This question is the only that showed up 3 times)

Ch. 6 Q. 63 (This question did not show up multiple times but 63 and 64 are fairly similar in skill level and I feel 63 to be a good question and this was a hw question which means that we should all be able to do this)

Ch. 7 - Q. 31 (This is a challenge, you have to be familiar with more than one of the concepts from the chapter like the prev. comment it is hw which means we should all be able to do it and was also brought up 3 times)

Ch. 8 - Q 66 (This is a theory question, it requires a different kind of thought and may give someone who is weaker on the equations a chance to show understanding in a different way, it was also agreed upon the most)

So even though we didn't exactly designate these should be the ones, I think that these would make up the best class set as these are the ones that came up the most, they were valid level questions, and since we live in Canada, it can be a democracy since nobody commented on an actual set and we'll go with the majority. I hope this initiative doesn't anger anyone but we needed a final set.

I agree on those 7 for our final questions to give to Dr. Mel. If no one disagrees I say we go with them.

I totally agree with Bella; the choices made are the most common with everyones and it is a very fair choice of questions.
